Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.
By James Montgomery

<P>Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane's Addiction. Unofficially, it ended <i>very</i> early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures. </P><P> </P><P>To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere. </P><P> </P><P>According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned <i>down</i> Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town. </P><P> </P><P>Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures &#8212; Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar &#8212; ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called <i>Never Deserved the Future,</i> and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans). </P><P> </P><P>The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard &#8212; Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" &#8212; delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the <i>Chicago Sun-Times'</i> Jim DeRogatis. </P><P> </P><P>It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures &#8212; there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October. </P><P> </P><P>Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band's official-looking Web site and the Metro's online ticketing site &#8212; posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a <i>Deserve the Future</i> T-shirt. Cost: $30.</p>

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart And More Reasons Cannes Will Rock

With a lineup including the likes of Matthew McConaughey, this year's festival is bound to be different.

The lineup for the Cannes Film Festival hit Thursday morning (April 19), and we're already probably too excited about it. With some of today's best directors and unexpected stars, this year's festival may prove to be one worth paying very close attention to.

So here is our run-down of the five stories out of Cannes we'll be watching closely.

The Maturation of Rob and Kristen
One story from this year's Cannes lineup that people can't help but comment on is that both Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have films in competition. While both have acted in some independent films and more serious drama, Cannes will be their sort of coming-out party as serious actors, with "Cosmopolis" and "On the Road" representing their first baby steps into adult filmmaking post-"Twilight". The buzz around both films is much bigger than the names of the two stars, with two big-name directors, David Cronenberg and Walter Salles, attached as well, so it may be the serious breakout the two are looking for.

Matthew McConaughey, Actor
For a guy who's often seen as more of a "laid-back dude" actor, Matthew McConaughey has lined up an impressive series of films for 2012. He's starring in two in-competition films, "The Paperboy" from director Lee Daniels and "Mud" from Jeff Nichol. Both films will see him take on darker roles than the kind he's known for. In "The Paperboy," McConaughey will play a newspaper reporter who returns to his southern hometown for a story about a death-row convict. For "Mud," he'll team with the director of "Take Shelter" for a story about a man who escapes from prison.

The Follow-Ups
A number of the most anticipated films on the lineup for Cannes this year are follow-ups to breakout movies from critically acclaimed directors. Andrew Dominik made the underappreciated "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" back in 2007 and finally got around to his next movie with "Kill Them Softly," reunited with Brad Pitt. One of last year's biggest indie breakouts was the Michael Shannon drama "Take Shelter," directed by Jeff Nichol, who returns this year with "Mud." Jacques Audiard, director of 2009's grand jury prize winner, "A Prophet," is back with "Rust & Bone" starring Marion Cotillard.

What's Missing?
Several of the potential films that were seen as dark horses for the competition did not make the lineup. Many had hoped that Terrence Malick's next untitled romance with Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams would make an appearance, but there's talk that the film isn't finished yet. The same applies to Paul Thomas Anderson's highly anticipated follow-up to "There Will Be Blood," tentatively titled "The Master." Ryan Gosling's next film, "The Place Beyond the Pines," was seen as a likely addition to the lineup, but was left out. It should be noted that the festival roster has not been finalized, but Malick and Anderson films are unlikely nonetheless.

The Directors
Beside an impressive list of stars and upcoming titles, the roster of directors presenting films this year alone is enough get excited about the line-up. With directors like Cronenberg, Wes Anderson, Salles, Dominik, Matteo Garrone, John Hillcoat, Alain Resnais, Ken Loach and Audiard, the festival will be a hotbed of well-respected directors.

Tupac Coachella Hologram Continues To Spur Debate

MTV News staff argue for and against the 'Pac-O-Gram on Wednesday's 'RapFix Live.'

Not everyone is a 'Pac-O-Gram fan. When late rap legend Tupac Shakur was resurrected Sunday night on the Coachella stage as a hologram, music lovers everywhere took notice. Most applauded the effort, but there were those who felt uneasy watching a reimagined Tupac prance across the stage.

MTV News senior writer James Montgomery was quite skeptical of the whole display. "Who wouldn't want to see Tupac or anyone on a tour? But just for me there were some things about it that kind of bothered me," he said when he appeared on Wednesday's "It didn't seem really right to me."

From the beginning of the performance, Montgomery was rubbed the wrong way. "What the f--- is up, Coachella?" the optically enhanced Tupac image screamed before "Hail Mary" played from the stage speakers.

"Tupac died in 1996 and Coachella didn't start until 1999, which means that someone basically had to record that dialogue for him, which is kind of troubling," he said. "It's basically putting words in the deceased's mouth."

Rob Markman, senior hip-hop writer for MTV News, has the opposing view. He believes that the projected image of 'Pac onstage isn't much different from the big-screen video montages that rappers have used to honor Shakur and other fallen rappers like the Notorious B.I.G. and Big Pun during their own concerts.

From Buzzworthy: "

In addition to the artistic possibilities, the business prospects are also sure to be appealing to some. "It raises these weird questions about artist legacy," Montgomery said. "How long until you see every casino in Vegas get Elvis or Billie Holiday and they have these sort of quote, unquote live shows of these people?"

"RapFix Live" host Sway Calloway noted that no matter which side of the debate you fall on, quality is the most important aspect of it — and the general consensus is that the Tupac hologram was done well. "Dr. Dre sanctioned it, Afeni Shakur OK'd it," he said, referring to Tupac's mother and onetime producer. "Bottom line: If it was poorly done and it was wack, we wouldn't even be having this discussion."

What side of the debate do you stand on? Are you pro- or anti-'Pac-O-Gram? Sound off in the comments!

Coldplay Give a Sneak Peek of ?Princess of China? feat. Rihanna Video

They always give their fans what they want, and Coldplay shared a clip of their forthcoming video for ?Princess of China? during a gig earlier this week.

The ?Yellow? rockers were performing in Edmonton when they launched into the song, complete with Rihanna's vocal from the video playing on the screen behind them.

And of course, Ri-Ri looked amazing in her self-described ?gangsta goth geish? getup, along with multiple arms extending out from behind her.

In a previous interview, singer Chris Martin explained how they got Rihanna to do the duet- "It took a while to pluck up the courage to ask her. We did a show in Las Vegas and I met her and said, 'Do you think there's any chance?' I was very Hugh Grant-like and spluttering about it."
