You — the fans — voted for your favorite performances of the year, from VMA spectacles to Buzzworthy sets.

As we continue our weeklong look back on the year in music — MTV kicked things off on Monday with a list of the Best EDM Artists of 2011 — it was hard not to notice that the biggest stars in pop, rock and hip-hop put on some of their most buzzed-about performances — right on our stages.

From Adele's spine-tingling ballad at the VMAs to Two Door Cinema Club's rendition of the rollicking "What You Know" at Webster Hall, we culled 16 of the best performances of the last 12 months and you, the fans, voted for your favorites. Here, we present the top 10!

10. Odd Future, "Sandwitches," mtvU Woodie Awards

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All Loiter Squad, or Odd Future, for short, were one of this year's breakthrough acts. And when they hit the stage for this year's mtvU Woodie Awards, it was clear why. The performance started out tame enough. Tyler, the Creator's "Yonkers" kicked in and a little person impersonating Tyler approached the stage. The calm didn't last long, though, as the real Wolf Haley emerged and confronted the pint-size imposter. From that moment on, the raw, rambunctious, rabid energy that got OF noticed took over as Tyler, Hodgy Beats and the rest of the group launched into an unforgettable performance of "Sandwitches." — Steven Roberts

9. Adele, "Someone Like You," VMAs

Some artists surround themselves with dozens of dancers, seizure-inducing banks of flashing lights and other tricks when they take the stage. But when it comes to Adele's take on the heartbreaking second single from 21 at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, all it took was a grand piano, a single spotlight and some emotive hand gestures. Perfect. — Gil Kaufman

8. Jack's Mannequin, "Release Me," Buzzworthy Live

It doesn't get much more epic than a stripped-down performance right above Times Square. Andrew McMahon of Jack's Mannequin did exactly that with his ode to growing up and settling down, "Release Me," for Buzzworthy's special live series. It's just McMahon, his shades and a piano, and we don't need much else. — Kevin P. Sullivan

7. Chris Brown, "Yeah 3X/ Beautiful People," VMAs

The white suit, the swagger, the strobing VMA stage and some gravity-defying aerial tricks are what defined Breezy's jaw-dropping dance clinic at this year's VMAs. His high-stepping kung fu waltz through Wu-Tang Clan, head-banging ode to Nirvana and mid-air flips again showed that Brown is at his best on an awards-show stage. — G.K.

6. Lil Wayne, "Nightmares of the Bottom," MTV2 "Unplugged"

For his MTV2 "Unplugged" debut in June, Birdman Jr. took the stage wearing a black sweatshirt, black sunglasses and a red fitted baseball cap. Backed by a full band, Wayne launched into his catalog of hits, taking the crowd to musical heights. But one highlight in particular was the MC's premiere of "Nightmares of the Bottom," an instant smash-in-the-making that details Wayne's rise to the top and unwillingness to fail. — Rob Markman

5. Two Door Cinema Club, "What You Know," New York

To say it was a big year for Two Door Cinema Club, the indie-rock group out of Northern Ireland, would be an enormous understatement. The band toured the U.S. for the first time, opening for Tokyo Police Club, and debuted on the American alternative charts with "What You Know." Two Door Cinema played the song at an MTV Hive-hosted performance at the Studio at Webster Hall. The screaming NYC fans seemed to approve. — K.S.

4. Beyoncé, VMAs

At this year's MTV Video Music Awards, Beyoncé hit the stage in a sparkly tux and a glowing smile that never faded as — in typical Sasha Fierce fashion — she worked the crowd. From the effervescent single "Love on Top" (from her critically acclaimed 4) to her nod to the Motown era, the performance was ebullient. But it was the very last moment in her set that ensured it would go down in the VMA annals. Mrs. Carter, with a little hip-hop swagger, dropped the mic, opened her jacket and revealed an adorable baby bump. Leave it to the Queen B to rock the house, make headlines and set Twitter records all at once. — Andrea Duncan-Mao

3. Mac Miller, "Knock Knock," Chicago

Mac Miller's live performance of "Knock Knock" in Chicago is a pretty good peek at what you're in for at one of his concerts: very little gravity, a lot of movement and fans who could easily understudy for the rapper because they know every word to every track. And it's the Pittsburgh 19-year-old's pumped-up, feel-good presence that helped him land on another coveted list this year: MTV News' Hottest Breakthrough MC contest. — Rya Backer

2. Paramore, "Brick by Boring Brick," "Fueled by Ramen 15"

Paramore are living proof that you can go home again and, in the process, rock so hard that fans will vote you to the #2 position on MTV's list. Clearly psyched to be rocking the stage as headliners for FBR's anniversary event in September, the band's take on "Brick by Boring Brick" was typical high-energy Paramore goodness. Bassist Jeremy Davis and guitarist Taylor York spun and lunged around the stage as singer Hayley Williams looked shot out of a canon, bouncing and pumping her fists as she let the audience handle the first verse of the tune. Williams took over the vocals soon enough in her breathless best, leaving enough space for the sweaty, ardent fans to chime in at strategic points. — Gil Kaufman

1. 30Seconds to Mars, "Hurricane," "Unplugged"

30 Seconds to Mars' award for the Best Live MTV Performance of 2011 comes on the heels of a globe-spanning, record-setting tour. And Just as they did at the group's closing show in New York, the Echelon demonstrated their devotion to the band ... by voting in force. 30STM's poll-winning "Unlugged" performance of "Hurricane" features acoustic guitars and Jared Leto's sparse vocals, but it also comes backed by a stirring string ensemble. The mood inside the studio is undeniably somber but, like pretty much everything 30STM do, there's a raging, revelatory undercurrent too. Their performance is very much a communal thing, one where a celebration never seems all that far off. — James Montgomery

Lady Gaga Reveals Where She'll Spend Christmas

'I'll be eating with all my Japanese Little Monsters,' she tells MTV News.

Little Monsters saw how Lady Gaga celebrates Thanksgiving during her lavish TV special, and now we know where Mother Monster will spend the holiday season.

"Well I'll be in Japan right up until Christmas day," Gaga told MTV News earlier this month. "So I'll be eating with all my Japanese Little Monsters. I like shabu shabu [a form of Japanese hot pot]."

On Tuesday (December 20), the singer tweeted about her trip there. "Just arrived in Tokyo!" she wrote, including a photo of herself sitting in her hotel room. "So happy to see my Kawaii Monsters! #SleepyGaga bedtime. I'm a professional napper today."

She kicked off the gifting season with her holiday-themed pop-up store and window display, Gaga's Workshop, at Barneys New York. She and stylist Nicola Formichetti gave fans an idea of what the pop star would want from Santa with Mother Monster-inspired products like head-shaped candles, leather jackets, her favorite books and chocolates shaped like shoes.

The singer is expected to land Stateside on December 31, just in time for the 40th annual "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve.". She's one of the many acts lined up for the event, including Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, LMFAO and Florence and the Machine. The show will be anchored by "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, with help from Fergie and Jenny McCarthy.

The busy holiday season caps off an even busier year for Lady Gaga, who happened to be MTV News' Top Newsmaker of 2011. She tirelessly released singles, videos, personas, a chart-topping album (Born This Way) and scooped up awards at seemingly every show from the Grammys to the VMAs. She was also our #5 Best Artist of 2011, and her disco empowerment track, "Born This Way," boasted the #5 spot on the Best Songs of 2011 list as well.

MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. As we count down the newsmakers that mattered to you most, also check out our Best Artists, Best Songs, Best MTV Live Performances and Best EDM Artists of 2011.

Justin Bieber Tweets Encouragement To 'X Factor' Contestant

'Keep your head up,' Bieber wrote to eliminated teen Drew Ryniewicz.

There was just no consoling weepy 15-year-old "X Factor" contestant Drew Ryniewicz on Thursday night when she was sent home in an double elimination episode. The quirky teen with the fluttery, dramatic voice was in tears for most of the episode and when her time came even usually unflappable mentor Simon Cowell seemed choked up with emotion.

But avowed Belieber Ryniewicz got some serious consolation less than an hour after her run on the show ended when none other than idol add link: Justin Bieber Tweeted out a message of support to the Chino Valley, Arizona high schooler.

"@drewryniewicz keep your head up," Bieber wrote to the fan who showed off her bedroom shrine to the Canadian pop star during her audition episode. "I lost my first competition too. This is just the beginning for u. Never say never. Best wishes."

Though the departure from the show hurt — fellow teen rapper Astro was also sent packing — Ryniewicz tried to keep an upbeat attitude, following up Bieber's Tweet with her own message of hope. "Hey thank you for your love!," https://twitter.com/#!/drewryniewicz/status/142463447190351872" target="_blank">she wrote . "I'll miss the xfactor but have a lot more in stor for you all! Upbeat? Yes."

Because she's a teenage girl who auditioned for the show with an impassioned take on Bieber's "Baby," Drew couldn't help bragging a short time later, "Justin Bieber follows me now!" Good sport that she is, Drew also gave props to the remaining girls on Team Simon, Melanie Amaro and Rachel Crow, while accepting some positive vibes from Astro, remaining contestant Marcus Canty and former "American Idol" contestant Casey Abrams.

One of Cowell's favorites, Ryniewicz was done in by her piano-driven, seated take on Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," which the show's other judges dinged for being too sleepy.

While Cowell said that criticism was "absolute nonsense," fiercely defending his decision to have her sing another ballad — though Drew seemed to have wanted otherwise — on Thursday night he made a startling admission. "The reason Drew is in this position tonight is my fault," said Cowell, typically adverse to any second-guessing or display of weakness. "I take total responsibility. I genuinely believe you deserve a second chance. I'm begging these two [judges] to give her another chance."

But, alas, Cowell's fellow judges cast their votes against Drew and Cowell seemed ready to storm off the set, getting up from his chair with an angry look and taking the stage to console his charge while staring daggers at his fellow panelists and angrily ignoring host Steve Jones' requests for comment.

'We Bought A Zoo': The Reviews Are In!

'It's actually surprisingly charming and more emotionally understated than the material would suggest,' writes AP critic Christy Lemire.
By Kara Warner

After a seven-year hiatus post-"Elizabethtown," writer/director Cameron Crowe is back in action with his new film "We Bought a Zoo." Based on a true story and the book of the same name, Matt Damon stars as Benjamin Mee, a widower who buys a failing zoo in an attempt to reconnect his family after the death of their mother.

The critical masses always seem eager to offer up opinions on any new Crowe feature, and this time around, the likes have edged out the dislikes, earning the film a "Fresh" rating over at Rotten Tomatoes. Without further ado, let's wander through the "We Bought a Zoo" reviews!

The Story and Its Schmaltz Factor
"Sometimes, reacting to a movie is all about the expectations you bring with you walking into it. 'We Bought a Zoo' is about a family that buys a zoo. It's as high-concept as you can get, outside of maybe 'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes' or 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,' and it's equally straightforward in wearing its heart on its sleeve. We know to expect this ahead of time because 'We Bought a Zoo' comes from Cameron Crowe, the writer-director of 'Say Anything ...,' 'Jerry Maguire,' 'Almost Famous' and, more recently, the 2005 flop 'Elizabethtown.' We know there will be some poignantly phrased life lessons in store for this family as they struggle to reconnect after the mother's death. The whole exercise could have been agonizingly mawkish, and/or filled with cheap, lazy animal-poop jokes. And yet, it's not. It's actually surprisingly charming and more emotionally understated than the material would suggest. — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press

The Writing and Direction
"Crowe takes a lot of heat for his portrayal of adorable kids, and already there's been a lot of online grousing about the Rosie character [Benjamin's daughter] being a female variant on the aggressively lovable Jonathan Lipnicki in Crowe's 'Jerry Maguire.' What Crowe doesn't get enough credit for is his continuing insight into and empathy with teen characters, and one of the really engaging things about 'Zoo' is how conscious it is in showing the thread between characters who shared an adolescence together (Damon's foil, a frequently sympathetic one, is an older brother played by Thomas Haden Church) and how that contributes to the hard-earned wisdom of characters trying to bridge generational misunderstanding. Which is to say that the scenes between Damon and Ford [Benjamin's teenage son Dylan] are among the best-written (Crowe collaborated on the screenplay with Aline Brosh McKenna) and best-played scenes in the film." — Glenn Kenny, MSN

The Performances
"The ups and downs of survival while hanging on by their fingernails are too linear for spontaneity and the happy ending is nothing short of contrived, but the performances are sincere and Mr. Damon actually seems to be having a ball, giving one of the best and most mature performances of his career. The relationship between Ben, still hiding from the pain of loss, and Kelly [Scarlett Johansson], a 28-year-old animal lover with no personal life, wisely avoids the Hollywood clichés that too often furnish easy solutions for loneliness, while Dylan sees fate in a restorative way when he discovers romance with Kelly's cousin (Elle Fanning, who, like her sister Dakota, is growing from child actor to leading lady with sex appeal faster than a flying bullet). The roles are mere outlines for meatier characters, but Mr. Damon brings a depth of humanity to the zealous but underwritten zoo owner that is guaranteed to inspire confidence." — Rex Reed, The New York Observer

The Final Word, Pro-Con-Pro Style
"Don't confuse the film's modest goals with a lack of gravity. Damon's father-son confrontation with Ford potently disproves that. As Benjamin says, 'all it takes is 20 seconds of insane courage to change your life.' There's a lot of fun waiting at 'We Bought a Zoo,' but it's the feelings that run through every scene that'll make you glad you came." — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"Does 'We Bought a Zoo' jerk tears and warm hearts effectively? Sure, dead moms and fuzzy critters will do that, especially when choreographed by a proud manipulator like Crowe. Perhaps it's churlish to complain about a filmmaker who pours so much — his taste, his tunes, his worldview, his good humor — into each movie. But watching the overlong, overfeeling, overdirected 'We Bought a Zoo' made me glad to return from Cameron Crowe's world to the real world, where things aren't quite so simple." — Dan Kois, Slate.com

"If you see it and you reject the sweetness or you can't hang with the open-hearted nature of the thing, I'm not going to argue with you. But I've seen what naked manipulation looks like, and that's not 'We Bought a Zoo.' It's just a film that wears its emotions right out front, and somehow, Crowe is able to brush aside any thoughts of what people will or won't think and just focus on building those moments that he does so well, those heartbreaking little moments of magic that have been the main currency of his career. Cameron Crowe remains, as always, uncool. And wonderful for it. 'We Bought a Zoo' is lovely, delicate, and absolutely worth seeing with your family this holiday season." — Drew McWeeny, HitFix.com

Michael Jackson's Family Not Out For 'Revenge'

'There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back,' Joe and Katherine Jackson say in a statement read at Conrad Murray hearing.
By Andrea Duncan-Mao, with reporting by Gil Kaufman

Katherine Jackson arrives for the sentencing of Dr. Conrad Murray at the Los Angeles Superior Court on November 29, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Murray was convicted on November 7 for the 2009 death of Jackson from an overdose of the powerful anesthetic propofol and faces up to four years in state prison. (Photo by )

At Tuesday's (November 29) sentencing hearing for Dr. Conrad Murray — where Michael Jackson's former personal physician received four years in jail for involuntary manslaughter — a statement from Jackson's parents was read in court.

"We still look at each other in disbelief: Is it really possible he is gone? It is simply against the natural order of things," Joe and Katherine Jackson said in the statement, read by Jackson family attorney Brian Panish. "We are not here to seek revenge. There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back."

Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook.

Along with Katherine, Michael's siblings LaToya, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie were also reportedly in attendance at the hearing.

In regards to the sentence, the family said in the statement: "We respectfully request you impose a sentence that reminds physicians they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder."

The judge agreed, lamenting that due to a new California law to address overcrowding in prisons, he was unable to sentence Murray to state prison. Stating that Murray practiced "horrible medicine" and had "absolutely no remorse," Judge Michael Pastor declined the defense's motion for probation and handed down the stiffest sentence possible — four years — which Murray will most likely serve in a Los Angeles county jail or on home confinement.

Upon leaving the courthouse, Michael's brother Jermaine, when asked if the four-year sentence was enough, shook his head and said, "No." Katherine told local TV station KTLA, "Four years is not enough for someone's life. It won't bring him back. But at least he got the maximum, and I thought the judge was very, very fair."
