'As someone that lives halfway between reality and fantasy, so do all my friends,' pop star tells MTV News about promo's surreal vibe.
By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by James Montgomery
Lady Gaga's full-length VMA promo was unveiled Thursday night (August 18), the same night her "Yoü and I" video made its television premiere and she announced she'd be opening the 2011 Video Music Awards during "MTV First: Lady Gaga."
Find out how to win a trip to the VMAs courtesy of Foursquare and MTV!
Fans got a tease of the promo earlier this week, in clips posted online of Gaga performing a new version of "Yoü and I" while taking off her bra. In the full promo, scenes of Gaga hanging out with her crew — drinking, dancing and being merry — are mixed with Gaga chilling out with a jazz band performing a slowed-down version of the latest Born This Way single.
Sitting at the piano during the shoot, Gaga tells the room, "I'm so happy my friends are here."
MTV News was on hand when the promo was shot, and Gaga said it's meant to give fans an inside look at what it's like to hang with the Mother Monster. "I really wanted it to be real, and I knew that MTV wanted it to be a true documentation of my life, and as someone that lives halfway between reality and fantasy, so do all my friends," she told us on set. "So I felt [it would be] an injustice to not sort of honor them in this short film that we did."
It seems that living "halfway between reality and fantasy" means just having a really, really great time listening to tunes and living it up. "I brought my friends here, and we did a jazz rendition of 'Yoü and I,' and we sort of just hung out together," she said. "And played around and did what we usually do, which is be creative with one another and talk about music and art and fashion and f--- around."
The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

On 'VMAs Revealed' MTV staffers recall the reaction backstage when Gaga unveiled her beefy couture.

The Video Music Awards have a long history of outrageous, over-the-top and just plain bizarre fashion firsts. Artists tend to think way outside the box when it comes to dressing up for the VMAs, but perhaps no getup in show history has gotten as much attention, caused as much head scratching and turned more heads than Lady Gaga's infamous meat dress.
After walking the white carpet in a flowing gold and burgundy Alexander McQueen dress with a matching headdress, Mother Monster shocked the world at the 2010 awards when she slipped into her third outfit of the night: a dress made out of some choice cuts of beef.
"As soon as I saw her on that white carpet I just knew that this night was gonna be Gaga insanity," said Alycia Belle, VMA wardrobe stylist for the 2010 show, in a new "VMAs Revealed" special that premiered on Saturday (August 20).
Before unwrapping the cow couture, Gaga had merely one wardrobe change during the show — a black Armani leather dress with spiked bustier. But when the time came to announce Video of the Year, the audience had no idea what was about to hit them. The folks working behind the scenes saw a suspicious number of coolers being brought into Gaga's dressing room, so they could tell that something was up.
"I'm getting calls that she needs to be in her seat, we give her kind of a two-minute head's up, the door opens up, and I see she's wearing a red dress," said Ernesto Elias, Gaga's talent escort at the show. "I start to notice people staring a little bit harder than they normally would."
And with good reason. While plenty of stars were wearing leather shoes, or even cowhide skirts, no one expected the eye-popping fashion choice that Gaga was about to unveil.
"I was literally this close to her ... I just remember looking at it and just wondering, 'Is that really ... ?' remembered Sandra Piedra, talent coordinator for the 2010 VMAs. After a harder look, Elias said he realized that it was not a "normal" type of fabric.
Let's call that the understatement of the year.
"People who were on the floor, who are right around her, are like, 'It's meat! Meat! Like, ground chuck meat!' " Dave Sirulnick, executive producer of the VMAs, recalled. "I know that there is nobody who ever heard the two words 'meat' and 'dress' put together before September 12 [2010] at about 11 p.m."
And with the announcement this week that Gaga will be opening the 2011 VMAs, fans of music and fashion everywhere can't wait to see how she'll top herself.

The upcoming drama Warrior (in theaters Sept. 9), set in the world of mixed martial arts fighting, is your classic underdog sports movie -- with a twist. The main characters (played by Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton) are brothers, and when they both make it to the championship fight, they must battle each other for the cash prize.
iVillage got its hands on an exclusive clip from the film. In this emotional scene, Tess Conlon (Jennifer Morrison) tries to convince her husband (Edgerton) to give up the dangerous sport. "I thought we agreed that we weren't going to raise our children in a family where their father gets beat up for a living," she says. We'll give you one guess who wins this argument!

'They're so deeply into that movie, which is so wonderful,' Jeff Bridges says of 'Lebowski' fans.

NEW YORK — The rug really did tie the room together. And the Dude was pleased.
We were outside the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City for the cast reunion of "The Big Lebowski" on Tuesday — partly in celebration of the film's Blu-ray release, partly because 13 years after its theatrical debut, fans still can't get enough of Jeff Bridges' cult comedy — and the ground was adorned, in lieu of the standard red carpeting, with a fancy runner calling to mind the peed-upon Persian rug that sets the film's entire plot in motion. Between that carpet, the opportunity once again to hang out with his old castmates and the sight of so many fans dressed up like their favorite characters, Bridges was having a grand old time.
"They're so deeply into that movie, which is so wonderful," he told MTV News of those fans. "I don't have any fans quite as strong as the 'Lebowski' fans."
His co-stars, it turned out, are pretty big supporters themselves. "He worked so hard on this, and you could never know it by looking at the film," John Goodman said about Bridges. "He made it look effortless. People ask me all the time if we improvised anything. That's just how he made it look — very graceful."
Julianne Moore's experience on "Lebowski," at least physically, was far from graceful, but she credits Bridges with helping her through the shoot. "I was pregnant, so I was sick most of the time," she recalled. "I remember how patient Jeff was and how funny and how artistic he is, all the pictures he took. He was always playing guitar in his trailer. He was an amazing guy."
Moore's pregnancy wasn't the only one that factored into "Lebowski." As fans of the film will recall, Moore's character, the intensely odd Maude, sneakily beds the Dude in order to make him the father of her child. And while all that talk of a sequel will likely never come to fruition — the cast, as if of one mind, dismissed the idea of future "Lebowski" films — Bridges and Moore have some ideas about what has happened to the child since the conclusion of the original movie.
Moore thinks the kid wound up in boarding school. But Bridges has a different notion, based on another film from his past. "Ooh, I just had a flash!" he laughed. "Maybe he hooks up with the Starman's child. Ooooh, huh? And they get together in sort of a Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid thing, man!"
