Arcade Fire, Florence and the Machine also earn high marks from fans in the fest's 10 year.

MANCHESTER, Tennessee — In the end, it wasn't so much the heat as it was ... OK, it was pretty much the heat. But the 2011 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival is now in the books, having come to a close Sunday night with an evening full of nods to its noodle-y roots: a fest-capping performance from Widespread Panic, the semi-annual Superjam set, the instrumental grandeur of Explosions in the Sky and, uh, the Strokes, who occasionally play songs longer than four minutes.
As the crowds began to file out of the dusty 700-acre farm that the fest has called home for 10 years now, the question was: Who managed to steal the show? Of the 120-something acts on the Bonnaroo bill this year, which was the best? The buzz from those exiting through the gates might surprise you.
Because, sure, we heard plenty of praise for the bands that fell within the traditional parameters of Bonnaroo — the String Cheese Incident's late-night performance on Saturday (complete with an inflatable dinosaur that descended on the crowd) earned high praise; as did Gogol Bordello's marathon set that same night; the walloping, womb-like low-end of Bassnectar; STS9's hippie trance; Dr. John's re-telling of his Desitively Bonnaroo album (with the Original Meters and Alain Toussaint in tow) and My Morning Jacket's darn-near-yearly jaw-dropping run. But there were also more than a few mentions of the nontraditional acts, namely, headliners Lil Wayne and Eminem.
But somewhat fittingly, it was the artists who managed to bridge the gap between those two camps who seemingly won. Folks went gaga for Mumford & Sons' sunset gig, a de facto victory lap for the current kings of "new-grass" (or whatever you want to call it), that included crowd-rousing versions of hits like "The Cave" and "Little Lion Man" and a sweat-drenched take on "Amazing Grace," aided by the Old Crow Medicine Show. High marks were also given to the Black Keys' rattling, rocking Saturday night show and the Arcade Fire's hard-working headliner on Friday night, too.
All of that is appropriate because, after putting the finishing touches on it's 10th year, Bonnaroo finds itself in a rather interesting position. Over the past few years, organizers have slowly inched hip-hop onto the mainstage, with mixed results (Kanye West's late-starting debacle in 2008, Jay-Z's well-received turn in '10. But in 2011, they placed two of the genre's biggest acts in night-capping slots, and the gamble paid off. And while the Sunday-evening sets — and, really, most of the day, too — seem reserved for jammier bands, one has to wonder if, in 2012, the balance might shift even further away from the fest's crunchier past. Could more hip-hop be headed to the big stages (like Wiz Khalifa's Saturday-evening set on the massive What Stage this year)? And, if that's the case, will the fans turn out in droves like they did this year?
Or maybe, they'll decide to play it safe and book more bands that tend to unite the festival's seemingly ever-growing, diverse fanbase: acts like Portugal. The Man, Robyn, Florence and the Machine and Beirut, all of whom also shined at this year's event. The future, it seems, is anybody's guess.
But even for a festival whose future might be cloudy, the present is sweet indeed. Bonnaroo 2011 was a sold-out success, a rollicking four days of great music and life-affirming (and genuinely shocking) positivity. Throughout the weekend, though there are questions about where things go from here, the same time-tested truths also were readily on display. Kids had the time of their lives; they got shirtless and sweaty and probably did some things they might regret one day. The bands had a blast, playing long and hard and with a genuine sense of purpose. And, of course, people complained about the heat. They're the things that will never change, and they make Bonnaroo great, year after year. No matter who's playing.

Talk about a jaw-dropping moment. Justin Bieber, who was not scheduled to appear at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, dropped in unexpectedly to claim his Golden Popcorn in the Best Jaw Dropping Moment category for his 3-D concert spectacular "Never Say Never."
"It feels great. I'm so blessed," Bieber told MTV News backstage. "I'm so glad to be back here and to have so many great fans. It's a great night."
"Never Say Never" was a career-defining moment for Bieber and he's fully aware of that fact. "It was great. It was my first time performing at Madison Square Garden and just being there and having that experience, I'm glad that I got to just have that experience. It was great."
After opening the envelope to reveal Bieber had bested his fellow nominees (which included did-that-just-happen scenes from "127 Hours," "Black Swan," "Inception" and "Jackass 3D"), "30 Minutes or Less" co-stars Danny McBride, Nick Swardson and Aziz Ansari were about to be in for an even bigger surprise than the upset victory itself.
Ansari -- who dressed up as Jaden Smith from "The Karate Kid," only to discover Will Smith's son wouldn't be attending -- cried after revealing Bieber's name, "He's not here! He's not here!" The "Parks and Recreation" star then joked that the singing sensation wouldn't be able to accept his first MTV Movie Award because, "He's too busy burning a huge pile of cash in a private jet while he's Skyping with Jaden Smith and Selena Gomez!"
But apparently Bieber wasn't too busy, as the 17-year-old (whose girlfriend, Selena Gomez, was in the audience) suddenly appeared from offstage wearing a "Miami Vice"-like outfit that included a blue blazer, white pants and sunglasses, causing the audience to erupt in the kind of screams that seem to follow him everywhere. After greeting the presenters, Bieber, who stood in the swirling stage fog, took to the microphone and told the crowd, "Thank you so much," explaining that he showed up to the MTV Movie Awards because, "I couldn't let down my fans."
Bieber went on to thank "Never Say Never" director Jon Chu, as well as his manager Scooter Braun, his family and, once again, his ever-supportive fans. "I love you!" he yelled before making a peace sign, which he signed off with a kiss.

'It's beautiful,' pop star says in an online video as she sees the setup for the first time.

Wondering what the Femme Fatale Tour will look like when it kicks off next week? Well, wonder no more! Britney Spears offered up a tease of the stage in a new video posted online.
"Oh my God!" she squealed walking into the room seeing the setup for the first time. "I love it!"
Spears walked the stage with her managers, giving fans a taste of what's to come once the shows kick off June 16 in Sacramento, California, with opening act Nicki Minaj. The stage has it all: lights, video screens, a funky neon-colored floor, lasers, lifts and giant butterfly wings.
"It's beautiful," Spears said as she listened to her music blast over the loud speakers and checked out the way the lights and video would play during what appears to be a reworked version of "Hold It Against Me" that included more electric guitar.
"The Femme Fatale Tour will hopefully just be outrageously spectacular," Spears recently said about the multi-city arena tour. "I'm just hoping that the choreographers will come up with just the most outrageous things, and I'm really excited. ... This is one of the most excited I've been about a project in a really long time, so I can't wait."
Minaj is just as excited about the tour, and she knows she has to go big to match the spectacle of a Britney show. "I'm just trying to put more theater on that stage. So much to me is music, but it's also about putting on a show, so that's my goal: to truly put on a show and incorporate theater and dance," she explained. "I think it's pretty easy to take it to the next level ... I think I'm nowhere close to where I could be as far as my shows have been."
Spears' longtime manager Larry Rudolph teased the tour's theme months ago when he spoke to us in Las Vegas before Spears played a mini-set for an excited room of fans at the Palms Hotel and Casino. Even then, Rudolph knew Brit's track "Till the World Ends" would play into the theme.
" 'Till the World Ends' keeps becoming a theme for us," he said back in March. "The way we come up with a concept for a show like this is we sit with Britney, she talks to us about what she's interested in and what excites her. We start with the songs on the album; we start with coming up with general, broad concepts. She tells us what interests her and excites her."

Bigger Than the Sound sizes Gaga's remarkable chart debut up against the year's other event album, Adele's 21.

As of Wednesday (June 1), Lady Gaga officially has the #1 album in the country, after selling 1,108,000 copies of Born This Way, according to Billboard.com. That's the biggest sales week since 50 Cent's The Massacre was released in 2005.
None of this should really surprise you, though. After all, no album in recent memory has been promoted to the degree that Born This Way has. You could hear it on FarmVille, in a Google Chrome commercial or through a special version of Tap Tap Revenge. You could buy it for 99 cents on Amazon.com, pick it up with a non-fat double latte at Starbucks (which also hosted an online Gaga-themed scavenger hunt) or get it at Best Buy with the purchase of a mobile phone and a two-year service contract.
That's to say nothing of the more than 20,000 "non-traditional" retailers that also stocked it ... noted musical hotspots like CVS Pharmacies, Whole Foods and Walgreens.
And in the weeks leading up to its release, you seemingly could not escape the woman behind Born This Way, either: Lady Gaga showed up on "Saturday Night Live," "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "Late Show With David Letterman," "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "American Idol" (twice). She guest-edited V magazine and the Metro newspaper. She appeared in a documentary that aired on MTV and greeted fans at a New York City Best Buy. No word on whether she also went door-to-door handing out samples of the album, but I wouldn't put it past her.
In short, there was no way you did not know of Born This Way's existence. As Newbury Comics' director of purchasing, Carl Mello, joked to me during the release-week hype, "If people aren't aware that Lady Gaga has an album coming out, then that's a problem for Interscope." So while BTW's big first week is certainly remarkable, it was by no means unforeseen. This was an album that, from the time Gaga first announced its title in September at the VMAs, was destined to debut at #1. It was inevitable. The real test begins in the weeks afterward, when we'll all see whether Gaga's got legs.
During my conversation with Mello, he noted that while Born This Way was the top seller at Newbury's 29 locations (by a long shot), holding strong at #2 was Adele's 21, an album that, in just 14 weeks, has sold nearly 2 million copies in the U.S. alone and snagged the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 nine times. You did not get 21 with the purchase of a Samsung Epic 4G or by rhythmically tapping on your iPhone, and it was not previewed on FarmVille. In fact, about the extent of its promotion has been one official single ("Rolling in the Deep"), a handful of TV appearances and a sold-out tour. And yet, the record has sold and continues to do so. It is, without a doubt, an album that has legs.
In fact, the success of 21 is all the more remarkable when you compare it to the all-out blitz that has surrounded (and, some argue, enveloped) Born This Way. Comparing the two seems almost implausible, if not impossible. But both are genuine phenomena, albeit in completely different ways: 21 is a slow-burning hit; its success is just about as unexpected as it is old-school. BTW is an event; a big blockbuster for which failure was not an option. Adele made the industry pay attention; Gaga had their ear since last year.
And while first-week numbers are all well and good, real success is measured eight to 10 weeks down the road; it's how we know whether an album resonates, whether the singles have stuck, whether the artist is in it for the long haul. Right now, I wouldn't bet on anyone catching either Adele or Gaga in the race for 2011's best-selling album, but the real question is: Can Born This Way overtake 21 for the title? Only time — and some hit singles — will tell. With the promo that led to BTW's release, Gaga has proven that she's willing to work, but now that the album has been foisted onto the world, the real work's just beginning: she's going to have to prove she's got legs too.
