Parents Television Council and Industry Ears criticize depiction of murder in new clip.

Rihanna has more than said her piece about how her 2009 assault at the hands of ex-boyfriend Chris Brown has affected her. But in the new video for her single, "Man Down," the singer is depicted shooting an unarmed man in the head in cold blood at a train station in what viewers later learn is retaliation for a previous sexual assault.
"Mama, I just shot a man dead," Rihanna sings in the video, which debuted on BET on Tuesday.
The Parents Television Council, the Enough Is Enough campaign and the entertainment think tank Industry Ears released a statement on Wednesday condemning the video for what the group said was an apparent enticement to young women to turn to violence.
" 'Man Down' is an inexcusable, shock-only, shoot-and-kill theme song," said Industry Ears co-founder Paul Porter, a former programming director at BET.
The lyrics to the song match the narrative of the video, including such lines as, "I didn't mean to end his life/ I know it wasn't right ... I took his heart when/ I pulled out that gun ... Oh mama, mama, mama/ I just shot a man down/ In central station/ In front of a big ol' crowd."
The PTC lamented that Rihanna had a "golden opportunity" to use her celebrity status to send an important message to young girls and victims of rape and domestic violence with the clip, but had missed the mark. "Instead of telling victims they should seek help, Rihanna released a music video that gives retaliation in the form of premeditated murder the imprimatur of acceptability," said the PTC's Melissa Henson.
Though a spokesperson for Rihanna could not be reached for comment, the singer took to Twitter on Monday to give her fans a preview of the clip's message. She wrote that it had a "very strong underlying message 4 girls like me."
MTV News spoke with director Anthony Mandler last month, when he revealed that Rihanna let him take the visual to the extreme. "We shot the video last month in Jamaica, and it's my favorite song she's ever recorded, so I was really excited to get involved," he said. "And it's just one of those songs that demands a strong narrative and visual, and let's just say, she let me go all the way. So I think you can expect something that's dramatic and shocking and intense and emotional and uplifting and enlightening."
The organizations have called for BET to stop airing the video immediately. A spokesperson for BET could not be reached at press time.
For her part, Rihanna has continued to tout the empowerment message of the clip, tweeting on Wednesday, "Young girls/women all over the world ... we are a lot of things! We're strong innocent fun flirtatious vulnerable, and sometimes our innocence can cause us to be naive! We always think it could NEVER be us, but in reality, it can happen to ANY of us! So ladies be careful and #listentoyomama! I love you and I care!"
It's not the first time Rihanna has been embroiled in a video controversy. Her sexually-suggestive "S&M" clip was banned in a number of countries earlier this year, and some questioned whether she was glorifying domestic violence around the release of the video for her hit Eminem collaboration, "Love the Way You Lie."

Jane Lynch and Sarah Palin are two very different women with one major thing in common: their boss. Both the Glee star and the Fox News commentator work indirectly under media mogul Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corporation owns Fox. So when Lynch made an appearance at the News Corp-sponsored D9 technology conference on Tuesday, audience members were shocked (and entertained) by her jabs at Palin -- not to mention Glenn Beck and even the cast of Glee.
"Filling in" for (a.k.a. "pretending to be") CEO Rupert Murdoch -- who usually does the opening remarks at D9 -- Lynch launched her own tongue-in-cheek agenda for Fox. One of her suggestions: Move Sarah Palin from Fox News onto Glee. "Though not firm as of yet, we're pretty sure we got Sarah Palin to do a guest spot on Glee," said Lynch. "She'll be singing an original tune that I penned; it's called 'Look at Me, I'm Bats**t Crazy.'" The joke appeared to get a big laugh from the audience, even though Palin -- who is contemplating a run for president -- is one of their own. Lynch also took aim at Glenn Beck, proposing that he "stay on at Fox for one final gig -- as a dying patient on House (whose) sickness is consuming him from the inside out." And she mocked Fox News' coverage of the "birther" movement by suggesting that the young cast of Glee contained "no real Americans." The comedienne has made it clear in the past that she's no fan of Palin. In a 2010 interview, Lynch compared Palin to her egomaniacal Glee character, Sue Sylvester, who has "these ridiculous views with very little knowledge underneath them." But even her character isn't impressed with Palin; on the show, Sue once called her cheerleading team "the stupidest teens I've ever encountered, and that's saying something: I coached a young Sarah Palin." Ouch.

Director Davi Russo recalls Gaga's crucial wardrobe swap during MTV documentary taping.
By James Montgomery
When he was tapped to direct "Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside," Davi Russo knew he was going to get an opportunity to do something all Little Monsters dream of: spend hours with Mother Monster and ask her practically anything.
But he probably never thought he'd also be giving her wardrobe advice. Though, as soon as filming began, he quickly realized that would be part of his responsibilities too. Luckily, like Gaga, Russo is a native New Yorker, born and raised in Brooklyn, and he currently lives on the Lower East Side, the same place Gaga haunted during her formative years. And so, though he'd just met her, he felt like the two shared enough background for him to offer a few sartorial suggestions.
"She came out in this majestic, pink [outfit], high-heels, full-on gown, with a bow, about yay big," he laughed, holding his hands a foot apart above his head, during "Lady Gaga: The After-Show." "And when we wanted to frame the shot, we wanted to live inside with her, because we wanted to give this feeling of intimacy, and we said, 'Oh my God, she has this 12-inch bow on her head!' And I'm thinking, 'Oh, God, we have to reposition our cameras ... '
"So, just immediately, during the haze of stuff, I just got as close as I could, and I said, 'Hey, you know, I want to kind of talk to you about New York and where you're from and where I'm from,' " he continued. "And she said, 'You want to talk about the neighborhood?' And I said, 'Yeah,' and she said, 'Oh my God, I need five minutes, I need to go get changed!' And she gets up, exits, and 15 minutes later, she comes out in this amazing, punk-rock, black leather jacket. Very cool."
And Gaga's ability to roll with the punches wasn't the only thing Russo learned during his time with the pop star. He came in reading all the same things we do, and he had no idea that, beneath all the glitter, she's really a DIY kind of girl.
"Again, it's so easy just to see the surface of things, and I think that's maybe the biggest misconception that a lot of people who may not be fans [have of her, that she's artificial]," he said. "Myself included. I didn't know much about her going into it, [but] I try to always peel back the surface, to see the real person, and the interview gave us the opportunity to really see that. And she's just like me; she has red blood, breathes the same air, and everything else. She's human."
What was the biggest thing you learned about Lady Gaga from "Inside the Outside"? Let us know in the comments!

'There was a lot of emotion,' she tells MTV News of wrapping five-movie saga.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, California -- When she sat down for MTV's Sneak Peek Week to chat about the high school indie "The Art of Getting By," Elizabeth Reaser also opened up about saying goodbye to "Twilight," which wrapped up its epic, multi-year production earlier this year.
"Oh, yeah, there was a lot of emotion," she said at the Pacific Design Center screening, where the indie flick had just screened. "I mean, [for] months we had been through so much different weather craziness [in all different locations that] we were in denial of it the whole time."
She recalled saying goodbye to the epic five-movie saga while shooting the highly-anticipated Edward/Bella wedding scene, even though her work on the film wasn't quite over. She'd had to stick around a bit longer to finish up some shooting on the film.
"Suddenly, we were on the dance floor at the wedding and it was suddenly over," she said. "It's also 7 in the morning, and we had been shooting all night, so it was this weird, surreal experience. We were all in shock."
