Drummer admits he doesn't know what will come of 'new material.'

On Friday morning, mere hours before he was due to take the stage with classic rockers Foreigner at Detroit's GM Renaissance Center, drummer Jason Bonham — the son of late Led Zeppelin kitman John Bonham — told Jim Johnson and Lynne Woodison of local rock station 94.7 WCSX that he'd be an ex-member of Foreigner as of September 1. But that's not the only thing he said.
Much to the delight of Led Zeppelin fans everywhere, Bonham revealed that he's been meeting up with Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones in recent months and that they've been "trying to do some new material and writing."
It was the first time since Led Zeppelin announced they would re-form for a single performance (which happened late last year at London's O2 Arena, in honor of the late Ahmet Ertegün, who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1969) that anyone connected to the band has confirmed publicly that new music could be on the horizon for the iconic rockers. While the bandmembers have stopped short of definitively ruling out such a reunion, singer Robert Plant insisted in the wake of last year's show that he intended to focus on promoting and touring behind his critically lauded album with bluegrass artist Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.
Not that Bonham knows what — if anything — will happen with the new material he's been working on with Page (who collaborated with pop singer Leona Lewis on an uneven version of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" at the Olympic closing ceremonies in Beijing on Sunday night) and Jones. He said he just shows up and takes his seat behind the kit.
"I've been over [to England] a couple of times," Bonham said. "I've been working with Jimmy and John Paul and trying to do ... some new material and some writing. I don't know what it will be, but it will be something. At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material. When I get there, I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it. Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It's my life. It's what I've dreamed about doing."
He said it's still too early to tell what will become of these "jam" sessions, but admitted that the "possibility of doing something is in the cards. I really felt it was in the cards from the moment we walked offstage at the O2." Bonham also explained that, before there could be a Led Zep LP, "lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out," but added that recording with Zep is "something I've always wanted to do."
Bonham noticeably didn't mention frontman Plant's name during the discussion. A spokesperson for Page's management had no comment on the matter, and a spokesperson for Jones' management could not be reached by press time.

Composers Salim-Sulaiman says Gaga had a 'very positive response' to their version.

Shortly after dropping a country-fried version of "Born This Way," Indian composers Salim-Sulaiman were approached to do a Bollywood version of the song, breathing new life into the chart-topping track and putting their own Desi seal on it.
"It was kind of difficult to start with," Sulaiman Merchant told MTV News, crediting entertainment website Desi Hits! for helping to curate the collaboration. "It's been such a big track, it's been very popular, and when you consider the style, it's very aggressive. It's got all the stuff that's required to make it a nice clubby track, so for us, the most important thing was: How do you get it into a zone where it's palpable to the Indian flavor? And the first thing we did was bring in a sitar, and that changed the flavor a little bit. We kept the aggression but changed the style and made it a little more four on the floor, a little more house."
Salim Merchant added that "we wanted to bring in an Indian sound ... and give a Sufi touch as well." He explained that after getting over some initial nerves, "It's fantastic how it all turned out. There was this little pressure because the song was #1. I guess once we put that baggage behind ... it was magical. Once we started it, everything came into place. It became a celebration."
While Gaga is a global superstar, Sulaiman said she has yet to really permeate India's pop culture. "Lady Gaga hasn't been as popular as we would like it to be over here, so this track wasn't as big before," he said. "We finished the mix, and now it's getting into the zone where it's gaining popularity. It's a great way to get eyeballs and ears onto Lady Gaga."
Has Gaga given the guys any indication of how she feels about the track? "She has liked it," Salim said. "She did mention she really loves it. When we did send her the final version, we did get a big very, very positive response. She really loved it. That's what she mentioned. I'm really happy. Finally the artist is Gaga about the song."

In early April, Catherine Zeta-Jones checked into Silver Hill Hospital, a mental-health facility in New Canaan, Conn., to be treated for bipolar II disorder -- a mental illness characterized by extended periods of depression followed by bouts of mild mania, and often brought on by stress. The news itself was shocking, but perhaps equally as surprising was Zeta-Jones' willingness to go public with her struggle.
"After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental-health facility for a brief stay to treat her bipolar II disorder," a rep for Zeta-Jones said at the time. That "stress" no doubt included her 66-year-old husband Michael Douglas' scary battle with throat cancer (he was declared cancer-free in January), as well as her busy life as a mother and -- let's not forget -- movie star.
Now, in this week's issue of People magazine, Zeta-Jones is speaking out about her struggle for the first time, encouraging those who may be suffering from similar issues to face the problem head-on. "This is a disorder that affects millions of people, and I am one of them," the actress, 41, says. "If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help."
In past interviews, Zeta-Jones had hinted at moments of depression. "I'm lucky. But that's not to say I don't get down on myself," she told U.K. newspaper the Daily Mail last year. "I try and stay positive, being negative isn't good for my personality. I don't just bring myself down, I bring everyone around me down. It's like a dark cloud: 'Uh oh, here we go,' and have to snap out of it."
With the added stress of Douglas' illness, Zeta-Jones -- who is slated to film Playing the Field in Louisiana with Gerard Butler, followed by Lay the Favorite with Bruce Willis -- found that she was struggling to get through the day, one of the signs of mounting depression. A friend told People: "The simple things would just seem overwhelming, like going out to dinner... There was just a little piece of her chipped away. It was hard to watch because I knew how hard she was trying."
In light of this, Zeta-Jones made the bold move to ask for help and the equally bold move to share her struggle so that others might benefit from her experience. We applaud Catherine for setting such a brave example, and we wish her well.
