Bridesmaids
Short Story:
From the producer of The 40-year-old Virgin and Knocked Up comes a hilarious new comedy that's already been dubbed a female version of The Hangover. Kristin Wiig stars as the down-on-her-luck Annie, whose stint as maid of honor for her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) leads her to befriend a pack of eccentric bridesmaids (Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper) and fake her way through every crazy maid-of-honor duty on the road to the wedding day.
What They're Saying:
"Kristen Wiig becomes a movie star and takes back the term 'chick flick.' Bridesmaids has a big heart and a grown-up mouth." -- RedEye
"This might be a turning point in feminism and comedy, provided that both sexes can embrace it." -- TIME magazine
Good for the Kids?
This one is not for the kids, but you should probably splurge on a babysitter. This comedy is filled with an all-star cast, is getting glowing review, and is entertaining for both women and men!
Priest
Short Story:
In a post-apocalyptic world where vampires and humans are waging a bloody war, the succinctly named Priest (Paul Bettany) takes refuge in one of the Church's walled-in cities. But when bloodsuckers capture his niece (Lily Collins), the Priest leaves his safe haven and, accompanied by the Priestess (Maggie Q) and his niece's boyfriend (Cam Gigandet), embark on a dangerous quest to save her.
What They're Saying:
"Not exactly an unholy mess, but still a rather too pious retread of classic sci-fi/action/horror riffs that lacks originality or pizzazz." --Variety
"In an era where monster mythology has become raw material for all sorts of mediocrity, Priest is one of the best examples of a broad-scale vampire blockbuster." -- Boxoffice magazine
Good for the Kids?
With intense action sequences, sadly this is another film that is not good for the young ones. Rated PG-13, it may be entertaining for the teenage set looking for a good action movie.
In case you missed:
Something Borrowed
Short Story:
On her 30th birthday, successful yet hopelessly single attorney Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) finally beds her longtime crush Dex (Colin Egglesfield). The only problem? He's engaged to Rachel's best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson). As the wedding quickly approaches, Rachel must balance her maid-of-honor duties while hiding her affair with Dex. Meanwhile, her confidante Ethan (John Krasinski) has a secret crush of his own that could turn this love triangle into a quadrangle.
What They’re Saying:
"Romantic comedy has taken a shellacking lately in a series of stupefying flops, but they didn't have Ginnifer Goodwin." -- New York Observer
"It made me like it against my will and despite my biases, and it made me like that I liked it. I enjoyed its walk of shame." -- OK! magazine
Good for the Kids:
Leave the kiddies at home for this rom-com romp -- the sex scenes and affairs might be a bit over their wee heads. But with an all-star cast -- including easy-on-the-eyes male leads Krasinski and Egglesfield -- and constant sexual tension, Something Borrowed is perfect for a girls' night out.
Thor
Short Story:
Get ready for another superhero flick! From the pages of a Marvel comic book to the silver screen, this movie begins with the mighty, hammer-wielding Thor (Chris Hemsworth) preparing to take over the throne of the celestial realm of Asgard. His irresponsible actions, however, lead his father (Anthony Hopkins) to banish him to Earth to learn some humility. Once in New Mexico (Natalie Portman) and must discover what it takes to be a hero when his ancient enemies invade Earth.
What They’re Saying:
"All in all, it's a good official start to the summer season -- and for a movie superhero counting down the days until he joins the all-star The Avengers." -- Newark Star-Ledger
"At its best moments, Thor weaves a spot of magic from the complex science of $150-million fantasy-film technology" --TIME magazine
Good For the Kids:
It's great for teens, not so good for the younger ones -- thanks to its plentiful action. With mostly rave reviews, this is a definite winner for any popcorn-movie fan.
